Do we like Vanessa Hudgens?
Our score: 7 out of 10. A long, steady record as an LGBTQ+ ally and no harmful campaigning, marked down for a 2020 pandemic rant and a couple of clumsy answers about accused men.
Vanessa Hudgens was born in Salinas, California, and grew up in San Diego, the daughter of a secretary and a firefighter. She was on stage in local musicals by age eight, then went homeschooled as auditions took over. In 2006 she became Gabriella Montez in High School Musical, and the duet Breaking Free with Zac Efron hit No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Since then she has moved between Disney, indie films like Spring Breakers, Broadway in Gigi, and live TV in Grease: Live! and Rent: Live. More recently she has been a Netflix regular through The Princess Switch films. Her mum is from the Philippines, and Hudgens has said in recent years that she has leaned into that side of her heritage.
The harm check first. On LGBTQ+ issues the record is good. In a 2015 interview she said she doesn't see people as gay or straight and described supporting the community as something people should do for each other. I couldn't find any statement from her on trans rights, good or bad, and nothing about climate or migrants either. That's a gap, not a mark against her.
The black mark is March 2020. On Instagram Live she called talk of distancing lasting till July “a bunch of bulls---” and said deaths were inevitable. Critics, including journalist Yashar Ali, called it heartless. She apologised the next day, calling her words “insensitive and not at all appropriate”. It was a dumb moment, and she took it back rather than doubling down.
Her answers about accused men have been clumsy. In 2018 she backed James Franco after he was accused of sexual misconduct, saying he was always respectful to her. In 2019 she told the LA Times she'd like to work with Woody Allen despite an allegation from Dylan Farrow, adding she'd never met him. Neither is campaigning, but it's a pattern of not reading the room.
As for the goss: in January 2026 influencer Bretman Rock told a podcast that, at a Coachella brand event before the pandemic, she looked at him and tried to hide behind her assistant. That's one side of the story, and online opinion split on whether he was reviving an old grievance. Hudgens hadn't responded when it was reported. Otherwise there's been nothing new lately.
