Do we like Kim Taehyung?
Our score: 7 out of 10. A clean record on harm and a big charity gift, held back by the Chris Brown livestream and a record that's thin on speaking up for others.
V was born Kim Taehyung in Daegu in 1995 and spent his early years in Geochang County, a small rural place a long way from the idol machine. He debuted with BTS in 2013 with 'No More Dream', made his acting debut in the 2016 historical drama Hwarang, and released his solo debut Layover in 2023.
His own account of the military break is oddly human for a global pop star. He told an interview that he “tried very hard to forget about V of BTS for a while” and focused on being Kim Taehyung, working out, reading and listening to music. He says the time apart made the group's return sharper, since all seven came back with stronger individual identities.
The messiest saga of recent years wasn't his doing. In late 2024, former ADOR chief Min Hee-jin said in an interview that V had phoned her and sent a text while he was serving, and online chatter then alleged he'd been given special treatment. The defence ministry said he used his phone only in approved hours and got no leniency, and no further action was reported. Separately, V and Jungkook were on the receiving end of online abuse from a YouTube channel, and in January 2026 a Seoul court dismissed the operator's appeal and added to the damages awarded to them.
On the harm check, we searched what he's said and done about LGBTQ+ people, women, migrants and the planet and found no harmful words or campaigning from him. His recent work we found is a Compose Coffee short film with fellow BTS member Jimin, and nothing in it ties him to anyone pushing harm. The record is thin on the other side too: we found no big statement either way on these issues. That is the honest state of the evidence.
The Chris Brown stoush is the one blemish. Fans criticised RM and J-Hope for posing with Brown, who pleaded guilty over a 2009 assault on Rihanna and was reported to be awaiting sentencing in the UK over a 2023 affray. V and Jungkook were heard singing along to Brown songs on a livestream the day before. Some fans say enjoying music isn't endorsement, others say BTS's reach carries more responsibility. Where you land depends on which you buy.
The good stuff is real. In March 2025 V donated 200 million won to the Korean Red Cross for wildfire victims, with the money going to relief and to improving firefighters' working conditions. That is a big, public gift to people in need, not a photo-op.
