Do we like Tony Leung Ka-fai?
Our score: 6 out of 10. No harm found and a long respected career, but we couldn't open much reporting, so we can't say more.
First, the mix-up. Tony Leung Ka-fai, nicknamed Big Tony, is a different man from Tony Leung Chiu-wai, the Wong Kar-wai regular. A lot of the web blends the two, including the charity stories and the Venice honours, so we've kept to what's actually about Ka-fai.
He's a Hong Kong screen veteran whose career goes back to the early 1980s. China Daily Asia describes him launching it as the youngest-ever Hong Kong Film Award winner for Best Actor, for 1983's Reign Behind a Curtain. That's the sort of start that explains four decades of leading roles.
The recent news is a win. In April 2026 he took Best Actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards for The Shadow's Edge, the Jackie Chan action film where he plays the villain. Reports put it as his fifth win in that category.
On the harm check, we searched for anything he'd said or done about LGBTQ+ people, women, migrants, health or the planet, and for the company he keeps on screen. Nothing harmful turned up. He's not a campaigner on any side that we could find, and the only gay-themed item that came up was a film role, which is acting, not advocacy.
In September 2025 he sat on the inaugural competition jury at the Busan International Film Festival, and China Daily Asia reported him talking up cinema's importance. That's a respected industry role, not a kind act for a cause, so we haven't counted it as one.
Honestly, the record is thin. We found no court cases or credible allegations against him, but several of the pages we tried to open were blocked, so this is a light pass, not a deep one. We found no verified charity work either; the donation stories belong to the other Tony Leung.
