Do we like Toni Gonzaga?

Our score: 6 out of 10. A long, clean run in entertainment, set against a contested campaign role and a Pride episode that gave airtime to opposition to the SOGIE bill.

Toni started young. At 13 she entered the GMA singing contest Metropop Star Search and lost, then worked as a teen talent, joined Eat Bulaga! in 2002 and moved to ABS-CBN in 2005. That year she became main host of Pinoy Big Brother. She has also starred in hit films like You Are The One and Starting Over Again and recorded eight albums.

Her big public stoush came in February 2022. She hosted the Marcos-Duterte proclamation rally at the Philippine Arena and introduced senatorial candidate Rodante Marcoleta. Marcoleta had opposed ABS-CBN's franchise renewal, which reportedly cost thousands of workers their jobs at the network that made her famous. She reshared a post calling her “unbothered”, and director Erik Matti called her stance “brazen, arrogant and snooty”.

Days later she left Pinoy Big Brother after 16 years. Whether you see the rally as a woman backing a candidate she has long been close to, or as a slap to ex-colleagues who lost their jobs, depends on where you stand. She mostly answered with silence and memes rather than explanation, and she has said she does not cancel herself.

The harm check is where the asterisk comes from. In the June 22, 2025 Pride episode of her show Toni Talks, guests Ricky Reyes and Renee Salud said they disagreed with same-sex marriage and the SOGIE Equality Bill. Salud said of some gay people that they ask for too much. Toni's only reported contribution was to point out that Senator Risa Hontiveros had pushed the bill, and Rainbow Rights Philippines said her team fell short on accuracy.

Rolling Stone Philippines reports no reply from Toni to the backlash. That is not the same as holding those views, and no words of her own against LGBTQ+ people turned up in our search. But hosting a Pride episode with guests like that and not pushing back hard is a miss. Nothing we found shows her pushing anti-vax or climate-denial claims.

The legal side is clean. Searches found no court case, fine or formal accusation against her. The one legal matter that came up was a cyber libel complaint filed by her mother against a columnist, which was dismissed. The most recent noise is a January 2026 round of online guessing over a viral blind item, which she waved off with a quip.
