Do we like Tom Hardy?
Our score: 7 out of 10. Nothing harmful found and some real charity, but the MobLand set claims are unresolved and the record I could open is thin.
Hardy is currently the lead name in MobLand, Guy Ritchie's Paramount+ crime series, where he plays Harry Da Souza. Variety says it's the second most-watched show on the platform, so there's a lot riding on whether he's in it. Fair warning: the articles I could open didn't cover his upbringing in any depth, so this one is a current-affairs column rather than a life story.
The stoush started in May, when reports said Hardy had fallen out with executive producer Jez Butterworth and others after season two wrapped. Outlets alleged he was late to set and kept co-stars waiting, which is the sort of thing that sounds juicy and is hard to prove. Variety's sources later said he was not fired, and the parties reportedly met in London to sort it out.
Helen Mirren, one of the co-stars supposedly kept waiting, came out swinging for him, calling him “the most amazing actor” and saying she'd work with him again “in a heartbeat”. Variety reports no statement from Hardy himself in that piece. So the on-set claims are alleged, anonymous and disputed, and I wouldn't convict anyone on them.
On the harm check, I looked for anything he's said or done about LGBTQ+ people, women, migrants, vaccines or the climate, and came up empty. No campaigning, no conspiracy rabbit holes, no donations to anyone nasty. His recent work I could confirm is MobLand with Ritchie, Mirren and Pierce Brosnan, none of whom raise a flag here. That's a clean pass, though a thin search result isn't a character reference.
The good stuff is real. In 2017 he launched a fundraiser for the British Red Cross after the Manchester attack, saying the families and children would need support. In 2022 he won two jiu-jitsu golds at an event raising money for REORG, a charity teaching the sport to military personnel and first responders, and reportedly calmed a young fan with a hug.
So: would we back him? Yes. The only black mark is a bunch of disputed whispers about lateness, with a famous co-star vouching for him, and the record shows no harm to anyone. Keep an eye on how MobLand season three shakes out.
