Do we like Thomas Müller?

Our score: 7 out of 10. A decent, team-first career with no harmful words found, but little on record about causes, so we can't go higher.

Müller is the classic one-club-man-turned-global-favourite: he came through Bayern Munich and went on to win 13 Bundesliga titles, two Champions Leagues and the 2014 World Cup. In August 2025 he left Germany for the Vancouver Whitecaps in MLS, saying he came to help the team win a championship.

The latest stoush is a light one. In July 2026 he said Messi's presence influenced a referee, recalling a yellow card, and put it as “I think the reason is simply that Messi was standing beside me.” Fans and media have long accused referees of favouring Argentina at this World Cup, while others say each call is just interpretation of the rules. It's football grumbling, not a character issue.

On the harm check, the record we could open is short but clean. Before Germany's opener in Qatar in 2022 he put out a statement saying FIFA's conduct around the OneLove armband and the tournament was hard to understand and was occupying the whole team. He also said he understood the criticism of the players while not sharing that view. He's not an activist, but there are no harmful words or dodgy company in what we found.

We went looking for court cases, serious allegations and bad-boss stories and found nothing we could open and confirm. There's an old on-pitch suspension from European competition in 2019, and a 2022 animal-rights group claim about horses, but we couldn't read reliable reporting on either, so they stay out of the boxes. That's the honest limit of what we can say.

The good stuff we can source is mostly about attitude. In April 2026 he told reporters he wanted BC Place packed and said “I don't really care about my numbers”, because winning matters more. He's long been linked to charity auctions for a grief-support foundation, but we couldn't open a dated report, so we're not putting that on the scoreboard.

So: would we support him? Yes. He's a joker with a huge trophy cabinet, no harmful record that we could find, and a team-first streak. The only caution is that the file is thin on what he's actually done for others, which keeps him out of the top tier.
