Do we like Thomas Jane?
Our score: 7 out of 10. No harmful words of his own turned up and the record is clean, but one film and some warm words about a co-star under a cloud keep it short of a 9.
Most people know Jane as Detective Miller on The Expanse, and he talks about that show the way people talk about a good job. In a January 2026 interview he said crew who had moved to other shows would line up replacements and come back whenever it was renewed, and that “We had a special thing going on up there in Toronto”.
The latest news is a sci-fi return. He has been cast as Dr Leonard McCoy in the last season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and castmates Celia Rose Gooding and Paul Wesley both spoke well of him and Kai Murakami in May 2026. Wesley called their work “fantastic”.
The talking point is Frontier Crucible, an independent western he led with Armie Hammer, Hammer's first screen role after several women accused him in 2021 of sexual misconduct and abuse. Hammer and his representatives denied it, saying all encounters were consensual, and the LAPD concluded in 2023 there was insufficient evidence to charge him. It was directed by Travis Mills and produced through Dallas Sonnier's Bonfire Legend.
On the harm check, the searches turned up nothing. No campaigning against LGBTQ+ or trans people, no anti-vax or climate-denial material and no conspiracy talk from him, and his recent work is a mix of studio and independent projects rather than one ideological stable. The Hammer film is the only project that gives pause, and that is about company, not his words. One online repost claims he made remarks on cancel culture and climate, but I couldn't find the original, so it's left out.
On the money front, in November 2022 he filed a creditor's claim against the estate of the late actor Anne Heche. The claim alleged she had signed a $157,000 promissory note and repaid only part of it, leaving nearly $150,000 owing. No outcome turned up in the report, and he was the one making the claim, not the one accused.
The good bits are modest but real. Asked about Hammer in an interview, Jane said “He's a good human being, and I like to see that,” and described a cast that gathered round a firepit each morning on set. He also played a deliberately awful character in a 2022 Donate Life organ donation ad, which is a decent use of a famous face.
