Do we like Thalía?

Our score: 8 out of 10. Decent, on the right side and a long-time LGBTQ+ ally, with one patch of public criticism over her silence on immigration raids and a thin record on some topics.

Thalía is the Mexican kid who became a telenovela queen and then a Latin pop superstar. Born in Mexico City in 1971, she rose as a teen performer, then led the melodramas Marimar, María la del Barrio and María Mercedes, which were watched across Latin America and well beyond. Her signature song is Amor a la Mexicana from 1997, and she later scored her first Billboard Hot Latin Songs No. 1 with Entre el Mar y una Estrella.

On the harm test, the record is clean as far as we could find. In 2016 she posted that she was “not a supporter and never would be a supporter of Donald Trump”, after fans spread rumours off the back of a photo of her on one of his helicopters. She had also joined a song recorded in response to his remarks about Mexican immigrants.

The one dent is on immigration. In June 2025 she drew criticism for staying quiet on the US immigration raids, then posted that nobody should go through this and called it “a direct blow to human dignity”. Some will say it came late, others that she got there. Either way, her own words are on the right side.

On LGBTQ+ people, she has been a long-time ally. In 2020 Mexico City Pride's organisers invited her as its ally star to give the march its starting signal, and she accepted. There was a 2016 internet pile-on over a concert moment with a rainbow flag, but that was a fan row, and we found nothing on trans issues either way, so we can't say more.

The scandal shelf is thin. A Mexican retailer sued her in 2017, alleging she hadn't met her obligations under a 2016 fashion licensing deal; she countered that its products weren't up to scratch, and we couldn't find how it ended. In January 2026 an old TV clip of Julio Iglesias kissing her on the lips resurfaced amid allegations against him, but the coverage we read quotes no statement from her.

The good stuff is real. UNICEF Mexico made her a National Goodwill Ambassador in 2016, after she'd worked with it since 2014 raising money and pushing for kids' rights to health, education and protection. She also backed the polio programs and emergency appeals.
