Do we like Sunita Williams?

Our score: 7 out of 10. A clean record and a long, well-regarded career, but she's said little publicly on the issues we care about, so we can't go higher.

Sunita Williams was born in Ohio in 1965 and grew up in Needham, Massachusetts, which she still calls her hometown. She graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, flew helicopters as a Navy officer, and was picked by NASA in 1998. She later retired from the Navy as a captain.

Her spaceflight record is the stuff of trivia nights. She flew three missions to the International Space Station, and in 2025 passed Peggy Whitson's mark for total spacewalking time by a woman, reaching 62 hours and 6 minutes.

Her best-known stoush wasn't of her making. A Boeing Starliner test flight meant to last about eight days stretched to over nine months because of the spacecraft's technical problems, and she came home on a SpaceX capsule in March 2025. Back on Earth she pushed back on the 'stranded' framing, saying “I never felt stuck.” and that there was always a way home.

On the harm test, there's honestly not much to chew on. We found no reporting of her saying or doing anything against LGBTQ+ people, women, migrants or the planet, no conspiracy-theory slide, and no dodgy company. That's a thin record on those topics rather than a glowing one, so we're calling it a pass on what's there.

Nothing new on her lately beyond her retirement. NASA's retirement took effect on 27 December 2025, and she spent January in India, including a talk in New Delhi where she said it “seems silly when you look at Earth from that perspective” to argue. She also said she'd feel FOMO about the Artemis II Moon mission but is happy to see colleagues go.

The good stuff is real. Needham's school committee voted to name a new elementary school after her in 2017, with the chair pointing to her as a woman in STEM, and she met students at events promoting science for girls. She's a Navy decorated officer too, with a Humanitarian Service Medal among her awards.
