Do we like Suga Free?

Our score: 5 out of 10. Nothing harmful found and a few thoughtful words on women, but a thin record and one messy public row keep him in the middle.

Suga Free's backstory is no fairytale. LA Weekly reported he was born in Gardena, moved to Oakland as a baby, then Compton, then the west side of Pomona, where he joined the 357 Crips. He was repeatedly locked up on misdemeanour and felony charges, and only started rapping in earnest at 27.

The big moment was Street Gospel in 1997, produced entirely by DJ Quik after a scout put them together. It sold around 124,000 copies, which is modest, but LA Weekly reports Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, Vince Staples and YG have all drawn on it. In 2016 Quik was back in the studio with him, so the mateship has lasted.

Here's the catch. His whole persona is the Pomona pimp-rap preacher, and LA Weekly described his lyrics as frequently problematic. In 1997 he told the Houston Press “this ain't no gangsta rap”, and he defended the record without apologising for it. That's the asterisk: a character built on a trade that treats women as commodities, even if it's played for laughs.

On the harm check proper, nothing turned up. I found no campaigning against LGBTQ+ or trans people, no anti-vax or climate talk, no politics at all, and no work with people who push any of that. In a 2016 interview he said “Times have changed, man, and it's a beautiful thing” about women's progress, and that “there's other ways of doing this” to younger blokes. Words like that count for something.

The messy bit is December 2022. MEAWW reported that days after announcing his marriage, he said on Instagram he was divorcing his wife and posted a photo he said was hers. She disputed it was her, called it defamation, and said “A person like that is nothing to me”. MEAWW noted none of it was independently verified, so it's one ugly social-media row rather than a pattern.

The good stuff is thin on paper. There's no charity or tribute on record that I could find. The Santa Barbara Independent profiled a man who described himself as “a low-key person”, and who has kept pigeons since he was a kid. That's honestly the whole list.
