Do we like Stephen Fry?

Our score: 7 out of 10. Decent, charitable and on the right side of most things, held back by his years of hedging on JK Rowling and Stonewall.

Fry is one of the most familiar faces in British entertainment, and these days he is also a charity figurehead. He is president of the mental health charity Mind, and the 2025 New Year Honours knighthood credited his candour in raising awareness and cutting stigma. The citation also noted his work raising money and awareness for people living with HIV and AIDS through the Terrence Higgins Trust.

The trans question is where he has copped the most heat. In 2022 he declined to condemn JK Rowling's views, said his trans friends were deeply upset by them, and suggested both sides should step back. In December 2024 he said on the Triggernometry podcast he wasn't sure he still supported Stonewall, called the charity's current policies “nonsensical” and described it as “shameful and sad”. Trans readers told PinkNews they were gutted.

Then in June 2025 he changed his tune. On The Show People podcast he said he disagreed “profoundly” with Rowling's views on trans issues, thought she had been radicalised, possibly by TERFs, and called her “a lost cause”. He also criticised her for not disavowing people who make violent statements. It's a welcome shift, but it came after years of fence-sitting.

On the harm check, then, there's no campaign against anyone's rights and no conspiracy theories in what we found. Nothing turned up on his recent work and who he makes it with that raised a flag, though that search was thinner than we'd like. The blemish is the years of both-sides hedging and the Stonewall comments, which is why it's an asterisk and not a clean sheet.

The one allegation on file is from 2023. An MCC member told the Mail on Sunday that Fry, as club president, made jokes about women and Muslims at a Lord's dinner. The MCC's chief executive said that account was “factually incorrect”, and other diners remembered the women remark differently and didn't hear the other joke. It was unresolved when reported, and we found no later outcome.

The latest news is mostly work and paperwork. Fox ordered his spy drama The Interrogator straight to series in February 2026, with Fry writing the pilot, starring and executive producing. In April his lawyer said the defendants in his CogX claim don't accept his account, so a court will have to decide, and no hearing has been scheduled. Even on a chat show in March he came across as good-humoured about a cheeky line of questioning.
