Do we like Shubman Gill?
Our score: 7 out of 10. Decent on both tests with no harmful words found, but the record on his views is thin and a 2025 investigation report is unresolved.
Gill is the bloke India handed the one-day captaincy to, and he is wearing it well. In the October 2026 series against West Indies he scored 110 in the first game and an unbeaten 223 in the second, and he finished with 334 runs and Player of the Series. The only blemish was a slow over-rate fine, which he and the opposing captain pleaded guilty to and accepted.
The loose thread is from January 2025. Punjab Kesari reported that Gujarat's CID crime branch summoned Gill and three other Gujarat Titans players over their alleged links to a chit-fund scheme, with reports saying he had invested a sum of money in it. The article carried no response from him, and I found nothing showing he was charged or that the matter went anywhere. That's an allegation about a bad investment, not a finding of wrongdoing.
On the harm check, the searches came back empty in the way you want. I found no statements from him on LGBTQ+ people, women, migrants or the climate, and nothing about him platforming anyone who pushes harm. His public comments are about cricket: selection, form and captaincy. That means the record on his views is thin rather than glowing. We can say he's said nothing harmful that we found, not that he's been a loud ally.
So where do we land? He passes both tests, a notch short of distinction only because the record is thin on what he stands for off the field. He's young, composed under pressure, and has been generous without making a show of it. The 2025 report is worth knowing about, but nothing suggests it was resolved against him.
