Do we like Shania Twain?

Our score: 8 out of 10. A long, visible run of backing LGBTQ+ fans and kids' charity work, with one awkward 2018 political answer she apologised for.

Shania's story starts in Northern Ontario. As a kid she sang in bars for miners, lumberjacks and hunters, often after midnight because she was underage. Her mum was her driver, manager and booking agent. Her mum and stepfather died in a car crash in 1987, and the new album is a love letter to that mum.

That upbringing runs through the new record, Little Miss Twain, which covers her life from her first gigs at eight to her late twenties, when she signed her major label deal. She called the bar years “character building”. It's a more personal Shania than most fans have met.

On the harm check, the record is good. In 2023 she told GLAAD she admires drag artists for their talent and courage, and said the world needs more love, not rejection. She told Attitude that LGBTQ+ fans are part of her audience and her life, and that she wants everyone at her shows to feel comfortable. We found nothing from her campaigning against anyone's rights.

The asterisk is April 2018. She told The Guardian she would have voted for Trump because, even though he was offensive, he seemed honest. After the backlash she called it an awkward answer to an unexpected question and said it wasn't an endorsement. She added that she opposes discrimination and doesn't share his moral beliefs. We found no later political comments from her.

The recent stir is smaller. In a June 2026 Sunday Times Magazine interview she said she doesn't see herself as a feminist, and that she isn't strong for a woman, just strong. Later she said she aligns with the values of what a feminist is. Some people read that as a word problem, others as a label she doesn't want. Either way it's about a label, not harm to anyone.

On the good stuff, her charity work is long-running. In 2014 her Shania Kids Can foundation, with the Dilawri Foundation, committed $100,000 a year for four years to a Brampton school for tutoring, snacks and life-skills coaching. She told the students in person. The record on recent collaborators is thin: we didn't find any worrying company, but we didn't turn up a detailed list of her recent projects either.
