Do we like Sean Combs?

Our score: 2 out of 10. A conviction, his own admission that he put his hands on a woman, and a long list of alleged suits, with little verified good to set against it.

The headline case is more tangled than most people remember. In July 2025 a Manhattan jury convicted Combs on two Mann Act counts of transporting people to engage in prostitution, and acquitted him of sex trafficking and racketeering. In October 2025 he was sentenced to 50 months and fined $500,000.

The judge, Arun Subramanian, told the court Combs was being sentenced for what he was convicted of, not what he was acquitted of. His lawyers now say that line was not honoured, and put that argument to the 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals in April 2026. Judges there called it an “exceptionally difficult case”, and no ruling had been reported in what I read.

In a four-page letter to the judge he accepted responsibility, saying he was “dead wrong for putting my hands on the woman that I loved”. That is his own admission on the violence, and it matters more than any court technicality. Critics noted the letter was written to win a lighter sentence, so read it with that in mind.

Then there's the civil pile. Lawyers Tony Buzbee and Andrew Van Arsdale said they represented more than 100 people with claims, and two anonymous suits filed in 2024 alleged he sexually assaulted two boys. His lawyers denied it, said he never sexually assaulted or trafficked anyone, and said the lawyer behind the suit wanted media attention. These are allegations, not findings.

On the harm test, I found no campaigning against LGBTQ+ or trans people, no conspiracy rabbit holes, and no climate or vaccine rubbish from him in what I read. The harm here is to women, and it sits in a conviction and his own admission rather than in culture-war politics. That's why it's a close call, not a clean pass.

The recent news is a slow grind. Prison records now show a projected release of 24 January 2028, with no reason given for the change, and he is appealing. ABC also reported he was involved in a fight at the prison in July, which his representative has not commented on.
