Do we like Scottie Scheffler?

Our score: 8 out of 10. A clean record on harm and a good one on kindness, held back from the top only by thin evidence on his wider views and some on-course snapping.

Scheffler is the world's best golfer and has been for a good while. His 2025 was a six-win season with two majors, which is the sort of run that makes everyone else look like they're playing a different sport. Born in New Jersey and raised in Dallas, he's about as low-drama a superstar as golf has produced.

The big stoush of his career was in May 2024, when Louisville police arrested him outside the PGA Championship. Police alleged he hit a detective with his vehicle, and he was charged with felony assault of an officer plus three misdemeanours. The county attorney then moved to dismiss, saying there wasn't enough probable cause, and a judge approved it. His lawyer called it “a big misunderstanding”, and the whole thing was gone within two weeks.

On the harm test, we went looking and came up pretty empty. No anti-LGBTQ+ campaigning, no conspiracy theories, no culture-war grifting turned up under his name. He did say in September 2025 that he gets calls and messages from President Trump after wins. That's a relationship he described, not a policy he pushed, and it isn't harm on its own. The gap is that he rarely talks politics at all, so we can't say much about his wider views.

Faith is central to him, and it's the kind that passes with room to spare. He has said: “I'm a faithful guy. I believe in a creator. I believe in Jesus.” Nothing we found has him using it against anyone. Faith alone is never a fail here, and he isn't preaching at people.

The flaw is temper. At the Memorial in June 2026 he berated his caddie Ted Scott after a tee shot found the water, and then explained the shot by pointing at a wind shift. It's not a good look, and it's what you see at times from high performers who hate losing. He also had a rough Ryder Cup in 2025, going 0-4 at Bethpage, but that's a sporting result, not a character one.

Nothing new on him lately beyond the golf. The record is thin on his views about LGBTQ+ people and the planet, and we found no sign he has campaigned either way. Judged on what he has actually said and done, he's a decent bloke who gets cranky when a putt lips out.
