Do we like Sandra Hüller?

Our score: 8 out of 10. Clean record on harm and no legal or conduct trouble found, plus real advocacy; one contested position on Gaza and a thin record on how she treats colleagues keep it off 9.

Sandra Hüller is the rare actor whose name on a poster means the film is probably worth your night. She won the Silver Bear for Requiem in 2006 and took her second in February 2026 for Rose, a black-and-white drama about a woman in a 17th-century village who poses as a man to live freely. She was Oscar-nominated in 2024 for Anatomy of a Fall.

The Zone of Interest seems to have changed how she uses her voice. She told Variety the film left her with an urgency to talk about fascism and how it is created, and said it made it more important in her life to be outspoken. That is a big part of why she is on this page as a good egg and not just a good actor.

On the harm test, we searched hard and found nothing. No slide into conspiracy theories, nothing against LGBTQ+ people or women, and nothing about the climate. She told Stern she thinks the old directorial habit of keeping actors in the dark is an "outdated patriarchal shit attitude", which is a fair shot at a very male tradition.

Her most contested position is Gaza. She signed the 2025 Cannes open letter from more than 350 film figures, which said they could not remain silent while genocide was taking place. She also joined a German appeal to Chancellor Merz seeking a halt to arms exports to Israel and more aid for Gaza. Where you land depends on whether you read those as a call for a ceasefire and aid, or as one-sided.

The Berlinale is the other stoush. Over 80 film workers criticised the festival for its silence on Gaza, and afterwards Hüller told German media she feared political influence and conduct rules could hem in its artistic freedom. Reasonable people can take that as a defence of free expression or as a dodge on the war. We read it as a worry about the festival, and it fits the rest of her record.

The real good stuff is practical. She became patron of the migrant rescue ship Sea-Eye 5, and at its 2024 christening she criticised European migration policy and said she wished the ship did not have to exist. That is putting her name where it costs her something.
