Do we like Robert Lewandowski?
Our score: 7 out of 10. A clean harm record and some real good deeds, but the file on LGBTQ+ and wider causes is thin and he has had a couple of public stoushes.
Lewandowski is one of the great modern centre-forwards. Reuters counts 567 career goals across Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Dortmund, and he left Barcelona after four seasons to sign with Chicago Fire as a Designated Player. It's his first time playing outside Europe.
The national team has been the messy bit. He has captained Poland since 2014 and holds the record with 89 goals in 165 games. In 2025 he fell out with then-coach Michal Probierz over the captaincy, said he felt betrayed, quit the squad and came back in August once there was a new coach.
Poland then lost 3-2 to Sweden in the World Cup playoff final on 31 March 2026 and missed the tournament. He posted a photo set to a farewell song, then said he was “not in a position to make any declarations” about his international future. Typical Lewy: he keeps the door ajar.
Money and legal drama has trailed him too, mostly through his old agent Cezary Kucharski. Lewandowski accused Kucharski of blackmail over a share sale, and the case has been heard in a Warsaw court. In May 2026 the Warsaw District Court convicted Kucharski of defaming Lewandowski and his lawyer, fining him; Kucharski said he would appeal. In 2023 Polish outlet Meczyki also alleged he left the federation with a World Cup dinner bill; his friend denied it.
On the harm test, we found nothing nasty. No remarks against LGBTQ+ people, women, migrants or the climate surfaced, and no pattern of dodgy company. To be fair, our searches found nothing either way on LGBTQ+ issues, so this is a clean sheet rather than a rainbow badge. The one pointed political act was the Ukraine armband he took to Qatar in 2022.
The good stuff is real. When Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022 he ended his Huawei ambassador deal, reportedly worth around €5 million, and said he couldn't imagine playing Russia. He then carried a blue-and-yellow Ukraine captain's armband to the World Cup. He has also donated personal items to Poland's big Christmas charity auction for sick kids.
