Do we like Ricky Gervais?

Our score: 5 out of 10. Big money to animal charities and no sign of harmful company, set against years of trans jokes he refuses to walk back.

Gervais grew up on a council estate in Reading, studied biology then philosophy at University College London, and worked in events before landing at radio station Xfm. That's where he met Stephen Merchant, and The Office, around 2001, turned a late bloomer into a global name. Since then he has hosted the Golden Globes several times and built a run of Netflix stand-up specials.

The trans jokes are the thing to know. PinkNews's timeline traces them from a 2016 Golden Globes gag about Caitlyn Jenner, in which he used her deadname, through a 2018 special and a 2019 tweet impersonating a trans persona, to a 15-minute segment in 2022's SuperNature. In that special he also said he supports trans rights, which is the bit his defenders point to.

The harm check is a stand-off rather than a smoking gun. In a January 2026 BBC interview he accepted that his stand-up often mocks trans people, saying it's because he thinks he's right, and he wouldn't apologise for old material. Attitude and PinkNews both read the pattern as targeting a vulnerable group. He reads it as comedians having no off-limits topics, and where you land depends on which of those you buy.

We found no sign he's tied up with the culture-war grift crowd. He works mostly with Netflix and longtime collaborators, and what turned up on the planet was animal-welfare campaigning. The sources didn't show him pushing conspiracy theories or anti-vax claims. That keeps this a mixed result rather than a fail.

The latest stoush wasn't really his. A nurse was suspended for six months by the Nursing and Midwifery Council tribunal after a sexual-themed workplace conversation, and the nurse told the panel the line was originally Gervais's. The panel rejected that defence, and Gervais denied on X ever saying anything like it, in a sketch, stand-up or privately.

Now the good stuff, because there's plenty. Gervais gave about $3.24 million from his Mortality tour profits to nearly two dozen animal charities around the world, and joked he could have bought 30 speedboats instead. He says a slice of the new Legend tour's ticket money will go to charity again.
