Do we like Regine Velasquez?
Our score: 8 out of 10. Decades of goodwill and no harmful words found, with the record a bit thin on hard advocacy and one fan spat to note.
Regine started as the eldest kid in a Tondo family that moved to Southern Leyte and then Bulacan. Her dad trained her voice early. She won the TV contest Ang Bagong Kampeon in 1986, took on her stage name, and by 1989 a Hong Kong festival win had Asian press calling her Asia's Songbird.
The arc since is a pop-royalty one: big albums, a film career, about 20 years at GMA-7, then a 2018 switch to ABS-CBN. This March, Billboard Philippines named her Woman of the Year, citing her lasting contribution to Filipino music. Not a bad trophy for forty years in the game.
The nearest thing to a scandal is from August 2025. A fan complained that Regine's sister pushed her at a meet-and-greet after the Super Divas concert with Vice Ganda. Regine replied on X that no one was pushed, said she had video, and added she was disappointed rather than angry. The fan said she still admires her, so it reads as a messy fan-service dust-up, not a pattern.
On the harm test, we found nothing nasty. Vice Ganda honoured her as a solid LGBTQ+ ally at a 2024 Pride March thanksgiving event. In 2019 she called out the mass harvest of giant clams in the West Philippine Sea, and a broadcaster told her to stick to singing. She also performed at Leni Robredo's 2022 birthday rally. That is mostly events and speaking up, not heavy advocacy, so we say that straight.
The good stuff is practical. After Typhoon Yolanda in 2013 she and her label gave P500,000 to the Philippine Red Cross from sales of her album. For the Finale run, she said her sister came up with a free second-night show, and she asked fans who could afford tickets to hand the free ones to people who couldn't.
The recent news is a goodbye of sorts. At the Finale shows she said she'd stop doing a few of her most demanding songs, and she told the press her voice is different now. She is stepping back from big solo concerts, not from music, and a documentary called Songbird is due in 2027.
