Do we like RAYE?

Our score: 8 out of 10. Nothing harmful found, a public record of backing LGBTQ+ people and survivors, and no court or conduct trouble, though the political record is thin.

RAYE is Rachel Keen, a south London singer-songwriter who signed to Polydor at 17 and spent years writing hits for other people. She has songwriting credits for Beyoncé, John Legend and Charli XCX, and she scored a run of dance features, including Bed with David Guetta and Joel Corry.

The formative stoush was with that label. She says she was stuck in a four-album deal without an album of her own, that her songs were handed to other Polydor artists, and that she was told to find her inner white girl. In 2021 she went public, left the label, and later released her debut independently. That is a fight about control over her own work, not a scandal.

On the harm check, nothing turned up. No nasty remarks, no conspiracy rabbit holes, and no dodgy company on her recent work. Back in 2021 she praised Halsey for using her platform to protect people from all sorts of communities. She said everyone should be able to express themselves without fear. The honest gap is that she hasn't said much on bigger political fights, so that is what the record shows rather than a clean bill of health.

This year had two flare-ups, and both reflect well on her. In February, 65 ticket holders were turned away at her Paris show. She called it unacceptable, apologised, and offered each of them a free ticket to any future show plus a signed vinyl. Ticketmaster put it down to a technical issue. In May she spoke about the online cruelty aimed at her over Amy Winehouse comparisons, saying it was not the same as defending Winehouse.

She is openly Christian, and it comes across as personal rather than preachy. She says forgiveness is central to her faith, and that without it she would be a really ugly, bitter person. Faith alone is never a fail here, and nothing in what we read suggests she uses it to push anything on anyone.

The good stuff is the work and the way she does it. She took on the major label system, won, and went on to the Mercury this month. Her sisters Absolutely and Amma opened her 2026 tour. If you want a named charity campaign, we couldn't find one.
