Do we like Rachel McAdams?

Our score: 7 out of 10. Nothing harmful found and some real good, but the public record on her views is thin, so we hold back from the top marks.

Rachel McAdams grew up in tiny St Thomas, Ontario, and has talked about writing a desperate letter to her parents at about eight, asking them to help her chase her dream of acting. She thanked them at her Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony in January 2026. It's a grounded start for someone who ended up a household name.

The arc is a good one. She broke out in 2004 with Mean Girls and The Notebook, had hits like The Time Traveler's Wife, Sherlock Holmes and The Vow, then earned her first Oscar nomination for Spotlight, the film about the Boston Globe's investigative reporters. She has said she won't make movies just to make movies, and her choices back that up.

Her one brush with scandal is as the person speaking up, not the one accused. In 2017 she publicly said that director James Toback made sexual remarks to her during an audition when she was a young theatre student, and that she left before anything physical happened. Toback has denied the broader accusations against him. She said she hadn't wanted to talk about it again, but that it had to stop.

On the harm test, the cupboard is bare in a good way. We found no comments from her on trans people, immigrants, vaccines or climate, so we can't tell you where she stands on those. We also found no harmful words, no grievance spiral, and no pattern of working with people who push that stuff. Her latest film, Send Help, is with director Sam Raimi and actor Dylan O'Brien.

Nothing new on her lately beyond a big January: the Walk of Fame star and the Send Help release, which got a warm reception. She told Hunger she loves hanging out with creative people, and that there's not much room for drama in the industry. Her pandemic-era good deed was donating to health care workers and appearing in a charity stream-a-thon in her home region.
