Do we like R. C. Bray?

Our score: 6 out of 10. A clean search and real professional respect, but very little public record on what he says or does beyond the microphone.

R. C. Bray is the bloke whose voice you've probably heard without knowing his face. He's an American audiobook narrator, and his big break was Andy Weir's The Martian, which became a runaway audio hit before the film came out. He's not a celebrity in the red-carpet sense, so the public record is thinner than for most people on this page.

The Martian story is a good one. Publishers Weekly reported that the publisher, Podium, picked him for the job, and that he nearly said no because he wanted to move away from sci-fi. Instead he read the opening line and thought, in his words, “well now, this could be interesting”. The audiobook won a 2015 Audie Award for science fiction, and he was separately nominated for best male solo performance.

On scandals, there's honestly nothing to tell. Searches for lawsuits, allegations, court cases, complaints and AI-voice disputes found no mention of him. That could mean a clean record, or just that nobody has reported on him much, so treat it as a gap and not a gold star.

On the harm check, nothing he has said or done against LGBTQ+ people, women, migrants, public health or the planet turned up in the sources I could read. I found no political posts, donations or campaigning from him either way. Nor did I find him publicly working with anyone who pushes harm, but I couldn't read his full credit list, so that part is not airtight.

The work itself gets good reviews. Kirkus called him a perfect fit for a legal thriller audiobook, praising a youthful confidence in his voice. His sci-fi and thriller catalogue is huge, and what the sources show is a working professional who has been consistently well regarded for over a decade.

On the good stuff, I couldn't verify any charity work or public causes, so I won't invent any. The credit is the craft: an Audie winner whose narration helped a self-published novel find its audience. That's enough for a lean yes. It's not enough for a gushing one.
