Do we like Primož Roglič?
Our score: 7 out of 10. Nothing harmful turned up and there's real charity work, but the record is thin and the 2022 crash statement is a genuine mark.
The latest news is a good one. On 7 October Roglič won the elite men's time trial at the European Championships on home roads, finishing seven seconds clear of Frenchman Bruno Armirail. It was Slovenia's first win in that event at the top European level, according to the government's news release.
The ugly chapter is from the 2022 Vuelta. After a crash on stage 16, his then team Jumbo-Visma published a statement saying Fred Wright had come from behind and pushed Roglič off his handlebars. Wright called it unfair and a racing incident, and Wright's team, Bahrain Victorious, said the footage backed that up. It said the statement had fuelled hostility towards Wright.
On the harm check, we found nothing. No searches turned up remarks from him about LGBTQ+ or trans people, women, migrants, vaccines or the climate, and no sign he has campaigned for or platformed anyone who pushes harm. Silence is not a gold star, but it isn't a red flag either. That is honestly the whole list.
The real good stuff is off the bike. His foundation backs young athletes from tough backgrounds, and one charity evening in 2023, built around sports memorabilia he donated, raised 200,180 euros for scholarships. That went to a foundation that helps athletes and talented students from socially disadvantaged backgrounds.
So where do we land? He passes the harm test on the record we could read, with the caveat that it is a thin record. The good-person test gets an asterisk for the Wright episode, and it sits against a charity record that looks genuine. We found no court cases against him in our searches, though several of the pages we tried to open were blocked, so treat that as a gap.
