Do we like Piolo Pascual?

Our score: 7 out of 10. A clean record with real charity work and one public political endorsement, but little on record about LGBTQ+ issues either way.

Piolo Pascual is one of the Philippines' biggest heartthrobs. He's been in showbiz for more than 25 years, and he now acts, sings and produces through his own company, Spring Films. In late 2023 he was juggling a solo concert, a Netflix series, a duets album and a Metro Manila Film Festival horror lead, and he joked he was the 'most promising old actor' around.

The nearest he's come to a political stoush was in 2020, when he was criticised for helping director Joyce Bernal shoot footage in Sagada that was linked to then-President Duterte's SONA. Pascual said the trip had nothing to do with the government, and fellow actor Alessandra de Rossi publicly backed him. It looks like a work gig that got read politically, not a campaign.

In 2022 he stepped out of his usual political silence. In an endorsement video he said Leni Robredo was the only person he'd vote for as president, and he framed it as a call for real unity rather than political dynasties. By 2024 he said he didn't have 'the heart to do politics' himself, though he still backs candidates with good platforms. Where you land on that depends on how you read Robredo's politics, but it was his own public choice and it was civil.

On the harm check, the record is thin but clean. Nothing turned up of him attacking LGBTQ+ people, women, migrants or the planet, or sharing conspiracy theories, and the projects we found were mainstream Filipino studio and network work. The flip side is that we found no public statements from him on trans rights or the SOGIE bill, so it's an absence of harm rather than a record of allyship.

The good stuff is real. In 2020 he donated 200 bikes to a drive helping workers get to their jobs during the pandemic, and in 2025 he became a Rise Against Hunger Philippines ambassador. He helped launch a feeding campaign for school kids and served meals to over 200 children with special needs. His line was that his advocacy has 'always been education'.
