Do we like Pierce Brosnan?

Our score: 8 out of 10. Decent and on the right side for decades, with a minor guilty plea over a Yellowstone hot spring and not much else against him.

Brosnan was born in Drogheda, and he considers Navan his hometown, where he spent his first twelve years. His father left early, and his mother went to London to work as a nurse when he was about four, leaving him mostly with his grandparents. He has called himself “an only child from a fractured family”, which goes a long way to explaining the solitary streak he later saw in Bond.

The route to stardom was a wander. He trained as a commercial artist, got hooked on acting after watching a fire-eating class at a London theatre, and studied at the Drama Centre. Tennessee Williams cast him in a play, and in 1982 he moved to the US and landed Remington Steele. That led to five turns as 007 from GoldenEye in 1995 to Die Another Day in 2002.

The scandal file is thin and a bit daft. In 2024 he pleaded guilty to foot travel in a thermal area after prosecutors cited Instagram photos of him on a feature at Yellowstone's Mammoth Hot Springs. Prosecutors asked for two years' probation and a maximum $5000 fine, but he copped $1540 in fines and fees. Silly and disrespectful of a fragile place, yes, but a one-off, not a pattern.

On the harm check, he comes up well. In 2015 he said “Sure. Why not?” when asked about a gay Bond, and welcomed Ireland's same-sex marriage vote with “I never thought in a million years, but hallelujah!” In 2025 he told People he was in “certain agreement” with Helen Mirren that the concept of Bond is born of profound sexism. I found no trans-related comments from him either way, so that's a gap, not a tick.

The good stuff is mostly advocacy rather than headline-grabbing donations, and I could only verify a little of it in what I read. The environment is clearly his cause, and the plastics campaign is the sort of thing the page likes to see: using a famous face for something bigger than himself. The list is short here because the sourced record is, not because there's a dark side hiding.

So, would we support him? Yes. He's a charming Irishman with a decent track record, a green streak and a dodgy moment in a national park. Nobody's perfect, and his worst offence involved a snowy hot spring and a phone camera.
