Do we like Peter Hotez?
Our score: 7 out of 10. A long record of backing vaccines and defending scientists, held back by an unresolved 2026 lawsuit allegation that he disputes.
Peter Hotez is a paediatrician and vaccine scientist who co-directs the Texas Children's Hospital Center for Vaccine Development at Baylor College of Medicine and is dean of its National School of Tropical Medicine. His career has been built on neglected diseases like hookworm, schistosomiasis and Chagas, then several coronavirus vaccines. He has also served as a US Science Envoy for the Middle East and North Africa, pushing vaccine diplomacy.
The vaccine most people know him for is a low-cost COVID shot his team developed with María Elena Bottazzi, shared without patent limits. In 2022 Houston Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher nominated the pair for the Nobel Peace Prize for it. A nomination isn't a win, but it says plenty about what the work was for.
On the harm test, he comes out clean. His public work is defending vaccines and scientists, and PolitiFact rated False a viral clip claiming he had threatened to unleash viruses once Trump took office, finding his words were stripped of context. We found nothing from him on LGBTQ+ or trans people either way, and no pattern of working with people who push harm. That's a gap in the record, not a tick.
He's also been blunt about what he sees as the cost of the culture war. In February 2024 he told PBS that attacking scientists crosses a line, and that scientists often lack protection. In January 2026 he called the Trump administration's cuts to the childhood vaccine schedule a “grave mistake”, saying as a paediatrician he'd admitted kids with meningococcal disease and rotavirus.
The cloud is a lawsuit filed in the Eastern District of New York. A former Northwell Health scientist alleges Hotez made repeated unwanted advances in 2024, and that she was fired weeks after he reported a joke she made. Northwell denies her firing was connected, and Baylor says Hotez denies her characterisation of the facts. It's early, unproven, and so far the only outlet we could open was an aggregator citing the New York Post.
Weighing it up: decades of work for global health, a large honours list, and a willingness to stay loud while being harassed all count for a lot. The allegation doesn't cancel that, and it doesn't vanish either. We'll watch for a ruling or filings that say more.
