Do we like Pedri?
Our score: 8 out of 10. No harmful words or company turned up and there's some real good work, but he's said very little publicly outside football.
Pedri is the quiet head of Spain's and Barcelona's midfield. He's the bloke who makes everyone around him look good. He grew up in Tegueste in the Canary Islands and still does work for his hometown club, which tells you where his head is.
The headline moment of his year was the World Cup. Spain beat defending champions Argentina 1-0 in extra time at MetLife Stadium for their second title. Pedri's cryptic Instagram post of '1 9 0 7 2 6' in June 2025 was later read by fans as the final's date, and he posted 'It was written!' after the win. He lost his starting spot on form in the knockouts, so he was on the bench for the final.
As far as scandals go, it's a short list. In 2024 he said he felt 'liberated' under Hansi Flick, and it was read as a dig at former coach Xavi. He called that reading 'a lie' and said the squad just trains differently now. In 2025 he went after referee Szymon Marciniak after a Champions League loss to Inter and asked UEFA to look into it. That's a footballer being stroppy about a ref, not a character flaw.
On the harm check, we found nothing: no posts or speeches against LGBTQ+ people, women, migrants or science, and no dodgy donations or campaigns. We also found no cause he has loudly taken up on those issues, so this is a pass on a quiet record, not a ringing endorsement. Court records and credible allegations also came up empty.
The good stuff is real and low-key. In 2025 he became an ambassador for the Barça Genuine Foundation, the club's team for players with intellectual disabilities, and turned up to train with them. In 2022 he joined the Kick Out Plastic campaign and gave a clean-up of his hometown to about 400 local kids. He also helped promote a drive to get Canary Islands bananas to food banks across Spain.
So would we support him? Yes. He's a gifted player who stays out of the culture wars and uses a little of his fame on kids and the environment. We'd just like to hear him say more about the things that matter to us.
