Do we like Nirmala Sitharaman?

Our score: 5 out of 10. Nothing nasty of her own turned up and there's some real policy good, but the people-and-planet record is too thin to score higher.

Nirmala Sitharaman is India's Finance Minister and a BJP figure who fronts the Modi government's budgets and tax changes. After her February 2026 budget, she told Rahul Gandhi to point to any paragraph that backed his unemployment claims. That's her brand: brisk, combative on the floor of Parliament, and not shy about hitting back at the opposition.

Her biggest legal stoush was over electoral bonds. In 2024 a Bengaluru special court ordered police to register a case on an activist's complaint alleging extortion and criminal conspiracy, naming her, other BJP leaders and Enforcement Directorate officials. It was only an allegation, and in December 2024 the Karnataka High Court quashed the FIR on a petition from a BJP leader who was also named. That's a court throwing the case out, not a finding of wrongdoing, though the opposition will keep waving it around.

A second legal fight ended this year. A criminal defamation complaint over remarks she made during the 2024 election campaign was dismissed in April 2026 by a Delhi magistrate, who said “I don't see anything in this matter to proceed further”. The complaint never got to a full hearing on the merits, so read it as a political spat that fizzled, not a verdict on her character.

On the harm test, the sources we opened show no words of her own against LGBTQ+ people, women or migrants, and nothing on climate either way. The flip side is that we found nothing where she spoke up for those groups at a cost to herself. With no pattern in either direction and the climate side unexamined, we're calling it mixed rather than a pass.

In 2024 she told a Chennai medical college that inner strength to cope with work pressure can come from faith, after the death of a young chartered accountant at EY. Critics, including Congress's KC Venugopal, called it victim blaming. She said her words were taken out of context, that she meant no victim shaming, and that the Labour Ministry had promised an investigation. It's a tone-deaf moment, not a pattern of cruelty.

On the good side, she announced and defended the September 2025 GST overhaul, which cut rates on more than 350 items including groceries and household goods. She also gets hit by plenty of fake stuff: a 2019 Logical Indian fact-check found she never said demonetisation had no impact on the economy, as headlines claimed. Fair's fair, not everything said about her sticks.
