Do we like Nikki Haley?

Our score: 5 out of 10. Real courage on the flag in 2015, real harm in her trans-sport and Don't Say Gay positions, and not much else turned up to tip it.

Haley was born in Bamberg, South Carolina, in 1972 to Sikh immigrant parents from Punjab. She worked in her mother's clothing business, studied accounting at Clemson, and won a seat in the state House in 2004. She became governor in 2011, then Donald Trump's ambassador to the UN from 2017 to 2018.

Her defining moment came in June 2015, after nine Black church members were killed at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston. The suspect allegedly embraced the Confederate flag, and Haley stood with Senators Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott to call for it to come down from the State House grounds. She said it was time to move it "without ill will". Plenty of politicians would have ducked it, and she didn't.

Early in her governorship she copped an ethics complaint alleging she broke state ethics laws while she was a state representative. In 2012 the House Ethics Committee voted 5-1 to dismiss all charges, finding enough to look into the claims but not enough evidence for a hearing. That's a clearance, not a cloud, and nothing newer in the court record turned up.

Her messiest campaign moment came in December 2023, when she was asked at a New Hampshire town hall what caused the Civil War and said it came down to how government would run. Democrats and Republicans alike pounced. Days later, at a CNN town hall, she said she should have said slavery, which is the right call, if a slow one.

On the harm test, the trans stuff is the problem. PinkNews reported in December 2023 that she said trans girls should not play on girls' teams, and that she would always fight against it. It also reported she said Florida's Don't Say Gay law doesn't go far enough, and PolitiFact found her claim about a DeSantis attack on transgender care inaccurate. PinkNews is an LGBTQ outlet, so weigh the framing, but the words are hers. Nothing on climate denial, anti-vax or election conspiracies turned up in what we read, and that's the whole list.

She also made a political call that splits fans. After running against Trump in 2024 and dropping out on Super Tuesday, she endorsed him and said in October 2024 she would vote for him. In June 2025 she wrote in Israel Hayom that his strikes on Iranian nuclear sites were very well done, and warned that Iran was not done. Whether that reads as hawkish realism or cheering on escalation depends on where you sit.
