Do we like Neeraj Chopra?
Our score: 8 out of 10. Decent record, backed others at a personal cost, though what we found on LGBTQ+ and climate issues is thin.
Chopra grew up in Khandra, a farming village in Haryana, in a joint family with no sporting background. He was a pampered eldest grandson who put on weight, and the family sent him to the Panipat stadium for fitness. That is where he met the javelin. He started training seriously as a teenager.
The rise was fast. He threw 87.58m to win Tokyo gold in 2021, India's first Olympic gold in athletics. He is now a household name and has plenty of brand deals. This year he ended a decade-long partnership with JSW Sports and launched his own athlete management firm, Vel Sports. Both sides called the split respectful.
The best-known stoush came after Tokyo. A furore blew up over Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem handling Chopra's javelin, and Chopra shut it down. He said Nadeem did nothing wrong and asked people not to use his name to push a dirty agenda. In 2025 he copped online hate for inviting Nadeem to his Bengaluru meet after the Pahalgam attack. He said the invitation predated the attack, that Nadeem's presence was now out of the question, and that his country comes first.
In April 2026 Chopra backed Paralympic champion Sumit Antil's complaint to the Sports Authority of India against coach Naval Singh. The complaint alleged mental harassment and verbal abuse, and The Bridge could not reach Singh for comment. Chopra called the coach's statements disgraceful and asked for decisive action. The Paralympic Committee of India then sacked Singh, according to The Week.
On the harm check, we found no words or acts from Chopra against LGBTQ+ people, women, migrants or the planet. He has not campaigned for any harmful cause that we found. In 2023 he publicly backed protesting wrestlers, saying it hurt him to see athletes on the streets demanding justice and calling for an impartial process. That's honestly a thin record on the LGBTQ+ and climate questions, so this is a pass on what's there, not a deep dive.
Nothing lately that's a scandal. He sat out the rest of the 2026 season, announcing it himself. Nothing found counts against his character, and the record shows him speaking up for other athletes even when it cost him in comments sections.
