Do we like Michelle Trachtenberg?
Our score: 7 out of 10. A decent record with nothing harmful found, but the sourced good work is thin and there is no big public cause to point to.
Trachtenberg was a New York kid who got her union card at five and was working steadily by her teens. Her big break was the title role in Harriet the Spy in 1996. She then spent three years as Dawn Summers, Buffy's kid sister, across 66 episodes, and later played Georgina Sparks on Gossip Girl.
The story that matters most is from 2021. When Buffy co-stars rallied behind Charisma Carpenter after her claims about Joss Whedon, Trachtenberg posted her own Instagram Story and reposted Sarah Michelle Gellar's statement. She accused Whedon of inappropriate behaviour toward her as a teenager and said there was a rule he wasn't allowed in a room alone with her. She said it would be her last word on it, and Whedon was not reported as answering her directly.
On the harm test, the search came up clean. We found nothing from her on trans people, women, migrants, vaccines or the climate, and no pattern of working with people who push those things. Her best-known recent role was a villain on a teen drama, and she said she loved playing Georgina, which is acting, not a stance. The record is thin rather than spotless, and we'd rather say so than invent a cause for her.
Nothing new on her lately. She died in February 2025, aged 39, and the tributes that followed were warm and specific. The Gossip Girl creators called her funny, kind and talented, and Blake Lively said her energy changed the feeling of any room she walked into. That's the colleagues' account rather than hers, but it was consistent across people who worked with her.
The good stuff is mostly about how she treated people and her own attitude. She credited Rosie O'Donnell as her biggest supporter on Harriet the Spy and said she was grateful for the experience, which is a nice thing to say about a gig she started on her tenth birthday. We couldn't verify any big charity work from reputable outlets, so we aren't claiming any.
So it's a yes from us. She passes on harm and she passes on nice, with a standing-up-for-others moment that cost her something. The score stops at a 7 only because the record is thin on big public causes, not because anything went wrong.
