Do we like Megan Thee Stallion?

Our score: 8 out of 10. Years of scholarships, a record of standing up for a classmate against homophobia, and nothing harmful found, with one contested workplace lawsuit still to be heard.

Megan Pete grew up in Houston's South Park neighbourhood with her mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and rapped her way from mixtapes in 2016 and 2017 to a No. 10 album in the US with Fever. Hot Girl Summer went platinum, and the Savage remix with Beyoncé topped the charts. In 2021 she won Best New Artist and two other Grammys.

She did it while finishing a health administration degree at Texas Southern University, which she graduated from in 2021 with a full final-semester load. She says college taught her discipline and gave her some of her best friends. Not many platinum rappers can say they walked across a stage with their cap and gown on.

The story that defined her public life is also the darkest. Tory Lanez was convicted at a 2022 trial of felonies over the shooting of Megan, and in November 2025 a California appeals court upheld his conviction and 10-year sentence. She then took on the blogger Milagro Gramz, and a Florida jury sided with Megan in December 2025 after she said the blogger acted as a paid surrogate for Lanez. A judge trimmed the award to $59,000, and her lawyers have been fighting to keep key parts of that win. She was the target of the abuse here, and the people doing it are the ones who answered in court.

Now the harm check. We found nothing nasty on LGBTQ+ people, women, migrants or the planet. She headlined LA Pride in 2023, where a Houston middle school classmate joined her onstage and said she had stuck up for him against homophobic jokes before he was out. In 2024 she opened a Kamala Harris rally in Atlanta and told the crowd to vote for the candidate if they wanted to keep loving their bodies, a jab at Trump over abortion; whether that is a hot take or a plain one depends on your politics, but it is not harm.

The unresolved matter is a lawsuit from her former cameraman, Emilio Garcia, who alleges a hostile work environment, unpaid wages and fat-shaming on a 2022 trip. She has vehemently denied it, and her lawyer called it a money grab. In August a judge found the evidence conflicting enough that it needs a jury, which is not a finding that anything alleged is true. We will wait for a trial, but it is the one reason this is not a full pass on being nice.

Lately the headlines are about her love life more than her music. In April she announced the end of her relationship with NBA player Klay Thompson, accusing him in an Instagram story of cheating. USA Today got no response from his representatives at that time. That is a very public breakup, which is not a verdict on anyone's character, and you can make up your own mind on it.
