Do we like Mayumi Tanaka?

Our score: 7 out of 10. Decent and on the right side with a clean record, but the coverage is mostly career talk, so there's little detail on causes to push it higher.

Mayumi Tanaka is the voice behind Luffy, the rubber-limbed pirate captain of One Piece, a role she has held for around 25 years. She has also voiced Krillin in Dragon Ball and Ryuunosuke Fujinami in Urusei Yatsura, so she's the voice of half your childhood without most people knowing her face.

The story people tell about her is about commitment. In 2022 she said on a Japanese variety show that she wants to end her career with Luffy. She also said she doesn't read the manga and prefers to find the story through scripts and the anime artwork, which keeps her reactions fresh, much like Luffy's.

On the harm check, the record is thin because there's almost nothing to find. We searched for statements on LGBTQ+ people, women, politics and the climate and found none from her. Coverage of her is about roles, awards and retirement plans, and nothing suggests she has pushed harm or kept harmful company. That makes it a pass, though honestly a quiet one, since there's little to go on.

We also looked for lawsuits, convictions and misconduct allegations and found none against her. The results that did show up were about other people named Tanaka, so don't mix them up. Absence of scandal across a 40-plus year career isn't a gold star, but it counts for something.

The best real-world moment is from 2016. After the Kumamoto earthquakes she recorded a video message in a balloon Luffy costume, urging residents to look after themselves and promising to protect her fans there. It's a small gesture rather than a fundraising drive, but it's kind and it's the kind of thing fans remember.

Now she's 71 and still winning awards. At the March 2026 Seiyu Awards she joked she may not live as long as the voice of Goku, but vowed to keep going another decade or so. She's cheerful and committed to her work, and she's earned the cheers.
