Do we like Mark Fergus?

Our score: 6 out of 10. No harmful words or acts turned up and his work leans humane, but the record is thin, with little on charity or his off-screen conduct.

Mark Fergus is a screenwriter who works in a duo with Hawk Ostby. Together they co-wrote Iron Man and were among the five credited writers on Children of Men, then created The Expanse for television. He's a behind-the-camera bloke, so there's far less goss on him than on the actors who say his lines.

The Children of Men story says a lot about how he thinks. Fergus and Ostby wrote a draft heavy on backstory that helped persuade Alfonso Cuarón to direct, though later writers cut much of it. Looking back in 2025, Fergus said the film's society turning on refugees is increasingly relevant, adding “The world is starting to catch up to that.”

The Expanse is the other big one. Syfy ordered it straight to series, with the pair writing the pilot. Fergus told the Daily Dot the writers' room was a mixed bag, and that Chrisjen Avasarala was added in season one partly to balance out a story of one guy intercutting with another guy. In 2018 he also played down the show's political timeliness, saying “It's not prescient at all.”

On the harm check, the record is clean as far as we could find. We found no posts, speeches, donations or campaigning from him against LGBTQ+ people, women, migrants, public health or the planet. His recent work includes a God of War series for Prime Video and a live-action adaptation of the comic Shadow Tiger, and none of it keeps company with the grievance-and-culture-war crowd.

On the good-person test, searches for lawsuits, accusations or complaints against him came up empty, and nothing suggests a bully. The flip side is that we also found nothing on charity or kind acts. This is a thin file, not a glowing one: clean, but under-documented.

Nothing new on him lately beyond Shadow Tiger, which had no production timeline or casting announced when it was reported in 2024. Add the fact that his best-known work asks audiences to feel for the people a society scapegoats, and he's an easy pick to enjoy. Just don't expect a saint's biography.
