Do we like Mark Cavendish?

Our score: 7 out of 10. Nothing harmful turned up and he has spoken up for others, but I couldn't open enough full articles to score him higher.

Mark Cavendish is the Isle of Man sprinter who spent nearly two decades as one of the fastest finishers in road cycling. He was the bloke you bet on when a Tour de France stage came down to a bunch dash. By the end he held the all-time record for Tour de France stage wins.

His farewell took a few goes. He announced his retirement in 2023, then changed his mind, kept racing and went on to break the stage-win record in 2024. He finally signed off with a win at the Singapore Criterium on 10 November 2024, which is a proper way to leave the stage.

Now the harm check. I searched what he has said and done about trans people, LGBTQ+ people, women, migrants, vaccines and the climate, and nothing came back under his name. That is an absence of evidence, not a glowing reference, but there are also no culture-war studios or grievance projects in his work. His teams were cycling teams.

Like most sprinters he has had his share of on-road stoushes, fines and angry post-race moments over the years. I couldn't open those reports in full, so I won't tell them as stories here. Nothing I found suggested a pattern of mistreating people, but that is a gap in what I read.

The good stuff I can source is that he opened up in a 2023 Netflix documentary about the hardest stretch of his career, and was candid about it for the benefit of people watching. His charity ambassador roles are also on record, but the pages I found were undated, so I've left the details out. That's honestly all I can pin down properly.

So where does that leave us? A champion who left on his own terms and has a clean file on the things we care about. He loses a point or two only because the full reporting wouldn't open for me, not because of anything he did.
