Do we like Marion Cotillard?

Our score: 8 out of 10. Years of hands-on environmental campaigning and public backing for a woman who spoke out, set against one old, contested interview.

Marion Cotillard was born in Paris in 1975 and was a working actor by 18, doing TV before the French comedy Taxi made her a household name at home. Hollywood came calling with Big Fish and A Good Year, and then she played Édith Piaf in La Vie en Rose, which won her the best actress Oscar in 2008. It was a proper arc: French genre fun, then the big one.

The messy chapter is her 2007 French TV chat, which resurfaced after the Oscar. CBS reported she said “we're lied to about a number of things”, suggested the World Trade Center attacks were an inside job, and said she wasn't convinced about the moon landing. Her lawyer said she never meant to dispute the September 11 attacks and that she regretted how the old remarks had been taken out of context. That's conspiracy-adjacent talk, but it's one interview from nearly two decades ago, not a campaign.

On the harm check, that is the only thing that turned up. We found no words from her against LGBTQ+ people, migrants or anyone else, and no pattern of platforming grifters. Her recent work, a thriller with Guillaume Canet and a Cannes midnight film from Bertrand Mandico, doesn't throw up any dodgy company. Ask her about politics today and she told Le Parisien nobody currently makes her want to vote, and that she's convinced extremist parties can't take power in France.

The planet is where she walks the walk. In 2013 she locked herself in a cage near the Louvre, with a banner reading “I am a climate defender”, demanding freedom for jailed Greenpeace activists in Russia. She later joined a Greenpeace Antarctic expedition as an Ocean Ambassador, pushing for a Global Ocean Treaty and ocean sanctuaries.

As for how she treats people, she has used her platform for others. In December 2024, as the trial of the director accused by Adèle Haenel opened, she posted “soutien absolu” for Haenel, and in 2019 she had thanked Haenel for speaking out. In 2023 she told Variety she once felt “like an object” with a director she didn't name, so she knows the issue first-hand.

There was also a 2016 tabloid-fuelled rumour tying her to a celebrity divorce. She flatly denied it on Instagram, and nothing has come of it since.
