Do we like Marine Le Pen?

Our score: 1 out of 10. Her own platforms have targeted LGBTQ+ couples, Muslims and renewables, a misuse-of-funds conviction was upheld on appeal, and no verified good deeds turned up to balance it.

Marine Le Pen is the daughter of Jean-Marie Le Pen, who founded the party then called the Front National. It was later renamed the National Rally and has long been dogged by allegations of homophobia, racism and antisemitism. Under her it has gone from fringe to a force: it won 31.5 per cent in the 2024 EU elections.

The big scandal is a fake-jobs story. In March 2025 a Paris court found her guilty of misusing European Parliament money: assistants paid by Parliament allegedly did party work instead. Prosecutors put the sum at 1.4 million euros. She got a four-year sentence (two suspended), a 100,000 euro fine and a five-year ban from office. She has denied wrongdoing and said “It's my political death that's being demanded.”

The appeal was the latest twist. On 7 July 2026 the Paris Court of Appeal upheld the conviction but shortened the ban, and ordered a year under electronic tag. Within hours she told TF1 she was a presidential candidate and said her appeal to the Cour de cassation suspends the sentence. AFP reported that some supporters sent death threats to the presiding judge; nothing in that report says Le Pen did.

Now the harm check. Her 2017 platform proposed replacing the 2013 marriage law with a civil union for new couples, leaving existing marriages alone, and ending fertility assistance for gay couples. PinkNews reports she has since stopped pledging to revoke marriage equality, but an Inter-LGBT spokesperson told it her platform still threatens queer rights. That's a softer line, not a reversal.

On Muslims, in the 2022 campaign she proposed banning headscarves in public and enforcing it with fines, “in the same way” as seatbelt rules. Critics told Al Jazeera that singles out millions of French Muslims. On the planet, in 2021 she pledged to halt new wind farms and dismantle existing ones. Those are older campaign pledges, and I haven't confirmed her current platform.

The good stuff is thin. I found no verified charity work, no cost-paying stand for others and no reporting on how she treats staff. Her own case is that she has “J'ai les mains propres” (clean hands), which the appeal court didn't accept. That's honestly the whole list.
