Do we like Mahua Moitra?
Our score: 5 out of 10. Nothing harmful of her own on LGBTQ+ issues turned up, but one contested set of remarks and a long, unresolved legal fight keep her in the middle.
Mahua Moitra is a Trinamool Congress MP for Krishnanagar in West Bengal. The Lok Sabha expelled her in December 2023 for “unethical conduct”, a decision she took to the Supreme Court. We couldn't open a full life story this time, so the backstory here is thin and the column leans on the legal record.
The biggest stoush is the cash-for-query case. BJP MP Nishikant Dubey alleged she asked parliamentary questions in return for cash and gifts from businessman Darshan Hiranandani, and the CBI sent its findings to the anti-graft body Lokpal in July 2025. Moitra has admitted sharing her Parliament login details with Hiranandani but denies receiving cash or gifts. In March 2026 the Supreme Court stayed part of a Delhi High Court order on the sanction needed for a chargesheet, and the matter is still pending.
The egg row is the freshest mess. A complaint filed in June 2026 alleges her social media remarks about women who gathered outside the Krishnanagar court with eggs and tomatoes hurt religious sentiments and insulted a woman's modesty. She said the women were BJP workers. In August the court issued an arrest warrant because she didn't appear, and the Supreme Court had earlier given her no relief on the egg-attack matter.
On the harm check, we found nothing from her on LGBTQ+ or trans people, and nothing on climate, so that gap is honest. The sore spot is how she speaks about women who are her opponents. In July 2024 she posted a comment about the National Commission for Women chief, which she later deleted, and Delhi Police registered an FIR under a section covering acts that outrage a woman's modesty. She answered by mocking the commission and asking for an FIR against its chief.
She has also been on the receiving end of fakes. In 2024 a viral clip claimed she said sex was her source of energy, and BOOM rated that False after finding she said eggs. The interviewer said the audio had been deliberately altered.
In mid-August 2026 the Nadia district administration ordered her out of the Krishnanagar circuit house at night, after she'd checked in and had dinner. She wrote to Speaker Om Birla that it raised questions about the safety of women MPs. Opposition leaders including Akhilesh Yadav and John Brittas backed her. The administration hadn't responded when Outlook reported it.
