Do we like Mahira Khan?
Our score: 7 out of 10. A clean harm record and real humanitarian work, held back because the coverage is mostly entertainment press and we found little on her stance on LGBTQ+ issues.
Mahira Khan started out as an MTV VJ in 2006, then became one of the biggest names in Pakistani TV and film. Humsafar made her a household name in 2011, and she went on to star opposite Fawad Khan more than once, most recently in Neelofar, a romance out in late 2025.
The BBC put her on its 100 Women list in 2020. It said she speaks out against sexual violence, won't endorse skin-lightening products and backs anti-racism efforts. Her own message there was to “speak up about the causes and issues that matter”, which is a decent summary of her public line.
The harm check came up clean. We found no harmful words or acts of her own about LGBTQ+ people, women, migrants or the planet, and no record of her pushing conspiracy theories or working with people who do. We also found nothing from her on trans rights either way, and that's a real gap, so we're not claiming more than the record shows.
Her most politically charged moments came out of the India and Pakistan tensions. After the April 2025 Pahalgam attack she posted that violence “in any shape or form, is an act of mere cowardice.” Months later she called India's ban on Pakistani celebrities' social media accounts a “political game” and said she doesn't believe in banning art. Where you land on that depends on whether you read it as a plea for peace or as picking a side, but nothing in it targets any group of people.
Her recent news is mostly about work. She was at TIFF in September 2026, moderating a conversation and being recognised for her contribution to cinema. Her 2026 work also includes the film Aag Lagay Basti Mein, per Pakistani press coverage. That's the whole recent list, and there are no fresh scandals.
The good stuff is real. She has been a UNHCR goodwill ambassador, which the BBC credited with raising awareness of Afghan refugees in Pakistan. In 2026, UK fan meet-and-greets she took part in reportedly raised 180,000 pounds, all of it donated to Palestinian relief, according to Minute Mirror.
