Do we like Magdalena Andersson?
Our score: 5 out of 10. A middle score because too little was verified to say more: we found her record in office but not her words and acts on LGBTQ+ people, women or the planet.
Magdalena Andersson is a Swedish economist who has led the Social Democrats since 4 November 2021. She was born in Uppsala in 1967 and made her name in finance before she made it in the top job.
Her path ran through the Finance Ministry and the Swedish Tax Agency. She was Minister of Finance from 2014 through 2021 in three governments under Stefan Löfven, and in December 2020 she was elected the first woman to chair the IMF's Monetary and Financial Committee.
She became Sweden's first woman prime minister on 30 November 2021 and held the job until 18 October 2022, when the government changed after that year's election. She has led the opposition since.
The latest chapter is the 2026 election. The Social Democrats came out as the largest party with 28% of the vote, the prime minister resigned on 17 September, and the Riksdag speaker asked her to try to form a government. On 28 September she returned that mandate, saying support from centre-left allies, particularly the Left Party, was not enough.
Now the honest bit. We could not complete the harm check: nothing was verified on her words or acts about trans and LGBTQ+ people, women, migrants or the climate, or on who she keeps working with. We also did not get to court records, allegations or her own interviews, so we are not guessing.
What we can say is that her record is that of a mainstream centre-left finance minister and party leader, with no scandal turning up in the pages we managed to read. That is a thin basis, not a clean bill of health, so check this one again before you rely on it.
