Do we like Lata Mangeshkar?
Our score: 7 out of 10. Decent record and no harmful words found, but she publicly backed a divisive politician and the sources I could open on her good deeds are thin.
Lata Mangeshkar, the Nightingale of India, died in February 2022 after one of the longest runs in popular music anywhere. She sang for decades of Hindi cinema and her voice is woven through the soundtrack of modern India. So the question for our page is less about scandal and more about what she stood for off the mic.
The best-known stoush in her career was the royalties fight with Mohammed Rafi, which is widely reported in biographies and the Indian press. The short version is that she pushed for singers to be paid royalties and he held that a fee was a fee. I didn't open a source for it this run, so treat it as the well-told version, not a verified one.
On the harm check, nothing turned up in her own words aimed at LGBTQ+ people, women, migrants or the climate. Her politics is the contested bit. At a Pune event in 2013 she said she prayed that Narendra Modi would become prime minister, and The Quint reports she later served as a Rajya Sabha MP, though she told the interviewer she was “not even remotely interested in politics.” Where you land depends on whether you read that as a famous woman picking a side or as a signal of who she was comfortable with.
Her own words on the so-called rivalry with her sister Asha Bhosle are worth a read. She told The Quint the talk was largely manufactured, and that she said no to cabaret songs, which usually went to Asha. It's a refreshingly unbothered take from someone so often cast as a diva.
The good stuff is where my reading comes up thin. After her death the family said it would donate the cash portion of an award named for her and her father, which Modi had declined, to PM CARES, and Modi's letter said giving to charity was something she always wanted to do. Beyond that, I couldn't open a page confirming specific charity work, so I won't pad it.
There's also been a pile of posthumous noise, none of it hers. Nothing recent about Lata herself turned up in the news, just anniversaries and an award in her name, so there's no fresh scandal to report. That is honestly the whole picture I can source.
