Do we like Lang Lang?
Our score: 7 out of 10. A decent record with no harmful words found, held back because the file on his views is thin and one 2011 stoush divided opinion.
The biggest recent gig was the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics opening ceremony in February 2026. Curtis, the Philadelphia music school he is an alumnus of, said he helped kick off the games alongside Mariah Carey and Andrea Bocelli. A pianist doing the Olympics is hardly a scandal, but it is the biggest stage going.
The one real stoush on his file is from January 2011, when he played the song My Motherland at a White House state dinner. Some commentators read the choice as a dig at the US, since the tune comes from a Korean War film. Lang Lang said he picked it because he finds it moving, and CBS reported that account. Where you land depends on whether you read it as a pointed choice or a pianist playing a popular tune.
On the harm check, we searched his name against LGBTQ+ issues, women, climate, vaccines and migrants and found nothing nasty in his own words or acts. That is a thin result rather than a glowing one, because he mostly talks music, not politics. In 2023 he told the Oman Observer that musicians should be a bridge between cultures, especially in a crisis. There is no sign he has picked fights with anyone vulnerable.
The good stuff is solid. In 2013 the UN named him a Messenger of Peace, with a focus on global education. In 2026 he said his foundation supports more than 240 schools worldwide, and that he wants to do more with young learners. He wants kids playing with feeling, not just typing in the notes.
As for how he treats people, we found no lawsuits, no allegations from staff and no bad-boss stories from established outlets. Critics have knocked his showy playing style over the years, but that is a fight about taste, not conduct. We can't promise there's nothing out there, but we didn't find it.
