Do we like Lamine Yamal?

Our score: 7 out of 10. A clean harm record and real kindness, held back by one contested party and the fact he's only 19 and still building a record.

Lamine Yamal was born near Barcelona to a Moroccan-descended father and an Equatoguinean-descended mother, and he is a practising Muslim. He came up through Barcelona's La Masia academy and broke into the first team in 2023-24. Then came a domestic treble and Euro 2024, where he was the youngest player at the tournament and won Young Player of the Tournament.

The World Cup was the big one. Spain beat Argentina 1-0 in the final, and Yamal ended it embracing a tearful Lionel Messi. He played through a hamstring concern and scored just once, but his coach said he “really sacrificed for the collective good”. He's 19 and has already won every major tournament start he's made.

The Palestine flag stoush is where he copped the most heat. After Barcelona's title parade in May he waved a Palestinian flag from the bus and posted photos of it on Instagram. Israel's defence minister Israel Katz said he “chose to incite hate against Israel”, while Spain's PM Pedro Sánchez said it was solidarity millions of Spaniards feel. His coach Hansi Flick said it's not something he likes but it was Yamal's decision. Where you land depends on whether you read it as a statement about a war or as incitement; we found no words from Yamal himself explaining it.

On the other side of the ledger, he put his name to a firm stand on hate. After anti-Muslim chants were heard at Spain's friendly with Egypt, police opened an investigation and Yamal posted on Instagram that “using religion to insult people shows ignorance and racism”. That's a teenager with a huge platform using it to defend his community, which counts for plenty.

The blemish is his 18th birthday party in July 2025. Reports said people with dwarfism were hired as entertainers. A disability association, ADEE, lodged a complaint, and Spain's Ministry of Social Rights asked for an investigation. That is all alleged, and we found no outcome. Yamal said only that outside work he'll “enjoy my life”, and he did not address the complaint's specifics. It's a real question mark, not a pattern.

On the harm test, we searched for anything he's said or done about LGBTQ+ people, women, migrants or the planet and found nothing harmful. The record is thin on his views on those topics, so that is an absence of evidence, not a glowing endorsement. Nothing in what we read ties him to people who push harm.
