Do we like KZ Tandingan?
Our score: 8 out of 10. A clean record, a love song for LGBTQ+ people and big donations to typhoon victims, though the coverage on the harder questions is thin.
KZ Tandingan came out of Digos in Davao del Sur and shot to fame in 2012 as the first winner of The X Factor Philippines. She later did something few Filipino singers had done, taking a spot on China's big reality singing contest Singer 2018. That's a long way from a local audition tape.
Her big recent move was in March 2026. After the Araneta Coliseum shows, she announced she was going independent, thanking her label Star Music, her management and her family. In her words she was “choosing courage” and choosing to “trust myself”. It sounded exciting and a bit scary, as career leaps do.
On the harm test, we found nothing ugly. No anti-LGBTQ+ remarks, no conspiracy rabbit holes and no dodgy collaborators turned up. In February 2025 she released the ballad Nagmamahal Lang Ako, a queer love song that argues love is open to everyone, and she said she wanted to be the voice for a friend's story.
The good-person test is just as quiet, and that's a compliment. We found no lawsuits, no allegations and no stories of her mistreating anyone. Her interviews and the coverage of her shows paint a working musician who gets on with the job.
The good stuff is real. In October 2025, a fan at a New Zealand show asked for a budots dance and she turned it into a QR code fundraiser for earthquake victims. In November 2025 she and TJ Monterde donated a million pesos to Angat Buhay for families hit by typhoons Tino and Uwan.
The record is thin on the heavier questions, so we can't say much about her politics or what she thinks on every issue. What we do have is consistent: she backs LGBTQ+ people and she puts her money where her mouth is. That's an easy yes from us.
