Do we like Kōnosuke Uda?
Our score: 6 out of 10. No harmful words or acts turned up, but the public record is thin, so it's a cautious middle-to-good score.
Kōnosuke Uda is a Japanese anime director, and he's the sort of name credits roll past rather than tabloids chase. Netflix introduces him as the director of the new Ranma 1/2 series, noting his earlier work on One Piece and Days. He's also listed as the series' sound director.
Ranma 1/2 is his current big job: he directed the 2024 remake and, according to Anitrendz, is directing its second season as well. That season began airing in Japan on 4 October 2025 and streams on Netflix in select countries. Being kept on for a second go is a decent sign of how the studio sees him.
In a 2024 interview with Japan's DaVinci magazine, translated by Furinkan, he talked about wanting to animate the original rhythm of Rumiko Takahashi's work. He said Takahashi-sensei's unique perspective is expressed everywhere. It reads like a fan doing a job he cares about, which is no bad thing.
On the harm check: we searched for anything he has said or done about LGBTQ+ people, women, migrants, vaccines or the climate, and for lawsuits or allegations. Nothing came up at all, and the film and series work we found is mainstream studio anime, not anything tied to a culture-war outfit. That's a clean result, but it's also partly because he's a director who rarely does public commentary.
The good stuff is the work itself, plus the interview where he credits the original author with the show's feel. We found no charity record or public stand he's made on anything, so we can't give him the high marks a person with a track record would earn. Honest answer: no red flags, not much else.
