Do we like Kim Soo-hyun?
Our score: 6 out of 10. No harmful words or acts of his own turned up and the worst claims have lost ground, but the good-person side is a close call and several cases are still live.
Kim Soo-hyun was born in 1988 and started with a small part in the sitcom Kimchi Cheese Smile in 2007, then a lead in the youth drama Jungle Fish. Dream High in 2011 made him a star, and the run that followed turned him into one of Korea's biggest drama exports. In late 2024 he took the Asia Artist Awards' top actor prize off the back of Queen of Tears.
The mess started in March 2025, when the YouTube channel Garosero Research Institute alleged he had dated the late actress Kim Sae-ron while she was a minor. His agency, Gold Medalist, said they dated from summer 2019 to autumn 2020, after both were adults, and denied he dated her as a minor or pushed her to repay debt. Those claims are the whole stoush, and the agency's version is the only one a court or police have tested so far.
He fronted a press conference on 31 March 2025 and denied the claims. It landed badly with a lot of commentators: a criminal profiler said it felt more like a performance than a sincere statement, and a lawyer said it was worse than saying nothing. No apology was reported, which in Korea is a big part of how these things are judged.
Since then the tide has moved his way on the official record. The agency said police found the KakaoTalk messages shown by his accusers were fabricated and the voice recordings were AI-altered. In July 2026 Seoul police decided not to refer him to prosecutors over the family's Child Welfare Act complaint, citing insufficient evidence, and on 27 August a Seoul court threw out a watch brand's claim against his agency. Kim Se-ui, the channel's head, has been indicted and denies all charges.
It is not all tidy. Kim has sued the late actress's bereaved family, and on 26 October his agency announced that her mother and the family's lawyer had been referred to prosecutors over alleged defamation. Prosecutors haven't decided anything yet. A health food company's 3.9 billion won damages case against him and the agency has a first-instance ruling due in November, which he denies.
On the harm test, I searched for anything on LGBTQ+ people, women, migrants, vaccines, climate or politics and found nothing from him. The only talk of a political angle came from Kim Se-ui's lawyer, not Kim Soo-hyun. His comeback work is a Philippine fashion brand ad and fan events, and the Disney+ series Knock Off is still on hold. That's a thin record rather than a spotless one, but nothing harmful turned up.
