Do we like Kim Leadbeater?
Our score: 7 out of 10. Decent on the evidence we could open, but the voting record wasn't checked and her flagship bill split opinion.
The nastiest moment we found was done to her, not by her. During the 2021 by-election campaign, PinkNews reported that an activist who campaigns against inclusive relationship lessons in schools followed her to her car and pressed her on LGBT lessons. He denied shouting at her. She is reported as supporting LGBT+ equality, and her reply to him, as quoted, was “Why would you shout at a woman on the street?”
On the harm test, we found no words from her that demean LGBT+ people, women, migrants or anyone else. Her recent public line is the opposite: on the anniversary she urged political leaders to push back on divisive rhetoric and not to push people towards the extremes. She wouldn't name anyone, saying she didn't want to give “bad behaviour oxygen.”
The big thing she's known for is the assisted dying bill. It passed the Commons and then fell on 24 April 2026 when the Lords ran out of time, with more than 1,200 amendments tabled. The article says peers spoke passionately on both sides. Where you land on it depends on whether you see it as dignity for dying adults or as a safeguarding risk, and we're not here to settle that.
The only blot we could find is minor. In June 2025 The Spectator's gossip column reported that her office, which serves her as a parliamentary aide to the Culture Secretary, accidentally emailed a list of suggested questions to Conservative MPs. It's a blunder, not a character flaw, and no response from her was reported.
The honest gap is her voting record. We couldn't get a vote-by-vote record to open, so we can't tell you how she voted on trans rights, Gaza, welfare or climate. That's why this is a 7 and not a 9.
