Do we like Kim Keon-hee?

Our score: 3 out of 10. No harmful words about any group turned up and she spoke up for animals, but an appeals court convicted her of bribery and stock manipulation, which she denies.

Kim Keon-hee was South Korea's first lady as the wife of Yoon Suk Yeol, the president who was later ousted. She became known less for the role than for the scandals around it, starting with 2023 hidden-camera footage that appeared to show her being given a luxury Dior handbag. Yoon vetoed bills to investigate the allegations against her, and a week after the last veto he declared martial law.

The big one is the Unification Church case. Prosecutors alleged the church gave her two Chanel handbags and a diamond necklace to win influence with the president's wife, and in January a Seoul court sentenced her to one year and eight months for taking bribes. She denied all charges, calling them “deeply unjust”, and was acquitted that day on stock manipulation.

Then it got worse for her. In April the Seoul High Court raised the sentence to four years, convicting her over another Chanel bag and over the stock price manipulation the lower court had cleared her of. The court said she “failed to meet public expectations for her integrity”. Her lawyers argue the special counsel's probe was politically driven and say they will appeal to the Supreme Court.

On the harm test, our searches found nothing from her against LGBTQ+ people, women, migrants or the planet, and no conspiracy slide or culture-war grifting. What counts against her is the company she is accused of keeping: the special counsel alleges she worked with a shaman and church figures to get church members to join Yoon's party en masse. She denies it, and that trial is still in the allegations stage.

As of late October, the Supreme Court's Grand Bench had still not finalised the four-year sentence. In a separate influence-peddling case she was sentenced to seven years at first instance, which an appeals court cut to five after acquitting her on some charges, and both sides have appealed. Prosecutors have asked for a fresh arrest warrant to keep her held while that one plays out.

So: no sign of hate, but a long court trail. Nothing is final until the Supreme Court speaks and she denies the lot, so it's fair to stay open on the details. Still, an appeals-court conviction over luxury gifts and favours is hard to cheer for, and it's a long way from the kind-to-everyone standard this page asks about.
