Do we like Kim Cattrall?

Our score: 7 out of 10. No harmful words or acts found, queer-friendly work and a Kew Gardens role, but the record we could open is thin and the feud is unresolved.

Kim Cattrall was born in Liverpool in 1956, and her family moved to Canada when she was a baby. She grew up on Vancouver Island, was sent back to England at 11 and studied at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. She finished school in Vancouver, then won a scholarship to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York.

Her film debut came in 1975 in Otto Preminger's Rosebud. She worked through the Porky's years and played Lieutenant Valeris in Star Trek VI before Samantha Jones in Sex and the City (1998 to 2005) made her a household name. That role brought a 2003 Golden Globe, and she was inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame in 2009. She also founded her own production company, Fertile Ground.

The Sex and the City feud is the one scandal everyone knows. When And Just Like That was announced in 2021, HBO gave no reason for her absence, and the press tied it to her long-running rift with Sarah Jessica Parker. In 2018 she posted on Instagram that Parker was not her friend. Parker has said she has never spoken against her, so there are two sides to it.

In 2023 she did turn up for one scene as Samantha, shot without seeing the core cast or showrunner, according to Variety's reporting. She said then that she didn't think she'd ever say goodbye to Samantha, and called the cameo as far as she was going to go. Cranky, sure. Unkind to anyone outside that feud? We found nothing.

On the harm check, we searched her name against LGBTQ+ issues, women, politics, vaccines and climate and found no harmful words or acts from her. What did turn up is the opposite. She captioned her 2023 announcement of her cameo with “Happy Pride”, starred in Netflix's queer-led Glamorous, and joined the 2022 Queer as Folk revival. Her recent radio co-stars are Kelsey Grammer and David Duchovny, but we found nothing that counts against her there.

The good stuff is quieter than the headlines. She is an ambassador for the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and in December 2024 she helped promote the digitisation of its plant specimens by imaging one herself. Her page says she advocates for other causes, but doesn't name them. That's honestly the whole charity list we could confirm.
