Do we like Kiefer Sutherland?

Our score: 5 out of 10. Nothing harmful on the record, but a drink-driving history and a live civil suit he is fighting leave the good-person side unsettled.

Sutherland comes from Canadian political royalty on his mum's side: he is the grandson of Tommy Douglas. In 2019 he asked Ontario Premier Doug Ford to stop using Douglas's name and picture for his political agenda. He said he did not want a feud and that it was about his family's objection, not about policy.

The drink-driving history is the oldest stain. In 2007 he pleaded no contest to DUI in Los Angeles and got 48 days in jail, 18 of them for breaching probation from a 2004 DUI case. That is a pattern of poor judgement behind the wheel, not a one-off, though it is years old now.

The fresh mess started on 12 January 2026, when police arrested him in Hollywood after a dispute with a rideshare driver. ABC News, citing law enforcement sources, reported the driver alleged Sutherland punched him and tried to choke him. He was booked on suspicion of felony criminal threats and released on a US$50,000 bond. ABC said it sought comment from his representatives.

In early February the LA County District Attorney sent the case back to police for further investigation, and no charging decision was reported in what we found. In June the driver sued, alleging Sutherland was visibly intoxicated, hit him and threatened to kill him. Sutherland's spokesperson says the driver refused to stop the car despite repeated requests. None of this is proven, and we found nothing newer than June.

On the harm check, nothing turned up. We found no remarks on trans or LGBTQ+ people, vaccines or climate, and nothing about him backing anyone who pushes harm. In the Ford spat he said Ford was entitled to his policies, which is a long way from grievance politics. The recent work we checked turned up no troubling company. That is a thin record rather than a glowing one, and we'll say so.

There is also a bullying rumour. A 2021 fan post claimed he picked on his young Stand by Me co-stars. On The Talk in 2024 he called it untrue, and his co-star Jerry O'Connell backed him: “Kiefer did not bully us, there was no bullying.” One co-star's word is not the whole story, but it is on the plus side.
